is my child doing well in writing?

why are there always tears when we start to write?

The Problem: Writing Often Feels Too Big

For many students, writing isn’t just one skill—it’s many:

  • Coming up with ideas

  • Organizing thoughts

  • Writing sentences

  • Using correct grammar and spelling

When all of that is expected at once, it can feel like too much.

That’s when you see:

  • Avoidance

  • Frustration

  • Minimal effort

  • Shutdown

what are practical things i can do at home to help?

Here’s what we suggest

1. Break writing into smaller steps

Instead of “write a paragraph,” try:

  • Brainstorm ideas

  • Write one sentence

  • Build from there

2. Don’t correct everything

Too much feedback can feel overwhelming.

Instead: Focus on just 2–3 things at a time
(for example: complete sentences, capitalization, and punctuation)

Once they demonstrate knowledge of that, move on to the next skill.

3. Skip the “red ink everywhere” approach

When every mistake is corrected, students often:

  • Shut down

  • Stop trying

  • Feel like they’re failing

Less but targeted feedback = more growth.

The Shift: Less at Once = More Progress

Trying to fix everything at once doesn’t work.

It often leads to:

  • Overwhelm

  • Resistance

  • Loss of confidence

Instead, writing improves when we:

  • Break it into smaller chunks

  • Focus on one step at a time

  • Give clear, limited feedback

Why This Feels So difficult as a Parent

Most parents were taught that writing means:

  • Correcting everything

  • Focusing on mistakes

  • Pushing for perfection

But that approach often slows progress instead of helping it.

However, this is what we have done for the past 20 years with thousands of students, so that’s exactly what we provide for you.

work with us iF:

  • Writing feels like a constant struggle

  • Your child avoids or resists writing

  • You’re not sure what to correct

  • You feel like you’re doing too much—or not enough

  • You want a simpler, more effective approach

You don’t need to fix everything at once.

You just need to focus on the right things.

Start with the level that feels right for you.
