DESCHOOLING: The basics

What is deschooling?

1

This is for families who are transitioning from public schools to home schooling. As a result, there are preconceived ideas about what school is OR there are negative emotions that need to heal.

Enter the concept of “deschooling.”

This is an opportunity to reframe the brain about learning and schooling. So, before you actually start to home school, take time to deschool.

Ok, But what does that look like?

2

Great question! Unfortunately, I don’t have a standard answer to give you. This is all dependent upon your child and how scarred or hurt they were by public schools.

For us, it took only two weeks because our son had a great public school experience. However, we have worked with some families who took months to deschool. The amount of time will be dependent on your child.

They will let you know when they are ready for more formal educational experiences while you are deschooling. They’ll give subtle signs or stop fighting you when learning opportunities arise.

The key, though, is to make sure you take time to deschool. Don’t skip this step.

What are some examples of what others have done to deschool?

3

  • Go on local field trips to learn at museums, historical sites, etc.

  • Read a novel together as a family.

  • Study a specific interest of the student.

  • Camp for a week without any electronics .

Essentially, if it involves using the brain in a fun or creative way, that’s deschooling!

I give a specific example of what we did in my blog. Check it out below!

The Key: deschooling is a must

When you make this change to home school your child, don’t just jump right back into school.

  • Take time to enjoy learning together.

  • Build a love for learning in your child.

  • Give them time to heal and adjust.

Deschooling has to be the first thing you do at home!

Public school happened. It planted seeds in your child about how they feel about learning or about themselves. My guess is that you chose home schooling because those seeds were negative.

Deschooling ensures:

  • time to heal.

  • a chance to rewrite the narrative.

  • an opportunity to build your child’s love for learning.

Your child deserves it. You’ll love it.

Learning isn’t just tests and worksheets.

Before you drive the bus for them, let your children pick some of the destinations.

When you pause to deschool you will learn:

  • How your child prefers to learn

  • How creative you can get with content and resources

  • When your child will be ready to get down to a more regular learning schedule

Deschooling is great for the mind, body, and soul.
